This article describes several issues facing Australian youth in postmodern society. Increased drug use, crime, & suicide are identified as problems particular to youth. The author asserts that evidence suggests these problems are not confined to the socially disadvantaged & marginalized in society, but are a product of being young in the last decades of the 20th century. A population health approach is provided to circumvent these problems, & possible redefinitions of growth (in terms of improvement of quality of life) are presented. (40 refs) (SC)
