The aim of this cross-sectional study is to report the self-destructive & suicidal behavior of a sample of children & adolescents in child welfare institutions. The children were evaluated using the Child Behavior Checklist, the Children’s Global Assessment Scale, & questionnaires about suicidal & violent behavior. 32% of the sample had presented suicidal thoughts, threats or suicide attempts during the previous 6 months. The findings & their clinical implications are discussed. (44 refs)
