The high rate of mental illness in the Australian indigenous population is discussed in this article which examines the historical & current causes of mental illness. It also describes the aim of the health courses at Yooroang Garang: School of Indigenoug Health Studies, which focus on strengthening community, culture, self-esteem & support & include early intervention in mental health strategies.
