School-Based Postvention With Youth Survivors of Suicide: Balancing Care Against Caution

This article discusses suicide postvention programs in schools. Two distinct aspects of suicide postvention are presented: the process after a suicide during which an individual works toward emotional / psychological recovery & readjustment to a healthy lifestyle; & the provision of interventions combining education & counseling to prevent bereavement complications for the individual left behind in the wake of the suicide. A review of research pertaining to the efficacy of school-based postvention programs is included. (9 refs) (SC)
