This editorial discusses the accuracy of reporting suicide among American police officers. The author asserts that police investigators are the gatekeepers of information at the scene of death & can readily protect fellow officers & their families from the stigma of suicide. He describes a study which scientifically determined whether or not reported police suicide rates were accurate. Results showed that officially reported police suicide rates detected true suicides 79% of the time, whereas official municipal worker rates detected true suicides 93% of the time. (SC)
