This report examined firearm-related injuries in Canada from 1997 to 1998 in order to create effective injury prevention programs. It is noted that the number of firearm injury hospital admissions decreased by 29% from 1994/95 to 1997/98. Males accounted for 90% of these admissions & the average age for all admissions was 32 years. Of the 772 firearm injuries, 26% showed suicidal intent & were self-inflicted. Suicide accounted for 79% of the 1,037 firearm deaths. (2 refs) (SC)
