This proceeding discusses the mental health status of Australian rural populations. It is noted that a steady reduction in farms & agricultural profit coupled with increasing costs of living in rural areas may increase stress on this population, resulting in increased rates of suicide & other psychiatric/biological disorders. A discussion on the interaction between self-perceived usefulness & suicide is presented. Issues of community cohesion, stigmas against help-seeking behaviors, changing gender roles, & technological developments are discussed. (SC)
