Chapter
Forensic Journalism as Patriarchal Ideology: the Newspaper Construction of Homicide-Suicide (IN: Popular Culture, Crime and Justice, ed. by F Bailey and D Hale)
Websdale N~~Alvarez A
This chapter begins with a definition of homicide-suicide & situates the reporting of this phenomenon within the broader framework of the media discourse on violent crime. The content of 153 articles on homicide-suicide incidents reported in the “Arizona Republic” is analyzed. This analysis is enhanced by an interpretive exploration of crime stories. The authors conclude with a discussion of the ways in which forensic journalism creates a discourse on homicide-suicide that observes systemic violence against women in a patriarchal society.
