This 5-year prospective study evaluated attributes associated with suicide attempts in a group of American treatment-seeking persons with alcohol dependence. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 1,237 subjects from the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism at initial evaluation & at a 5-year follow up. Results indicated that subjects who attempted suicide during this period were more likely to have a history of previous attempts, to be younger, to be separated or divorced & have substance-induced psychiatric disorders.
