This study analyzes the effects of antidepressants on the cyclic AMP response element binding protein & the glucocorticoid receptor. Results indicate that cyclic AMP response element binding protein is down-regulated in human fibroblasts from patients with major depression & in postmortem brains of suicide victims with a history of depression. With regard to glucocorticoid receptor, its mRNA immunoreactivity, density & cytoplasmic-nuclear translocation are increased by antidepressants. (77 refs) (SC)
