This article examined the association between trends in antidepressant prescribing & suicide rates in Australia for 1991-2000. An analysis of databases of suicide & rates of antidepressant prescribing according to age & sex was conducted. Results indicate that changes in suicide rates & exposure to antidepressants are significantly associated. This effect is most apparent in older age groups, in which rates of suicide decreased substantially in association with exposure to antidepressants. (24 refs) (SC)
