This manuscript examines the trends in suicide by Albertans between the period 1961 & 1999. Suicide is used within the manuscript as a measure of the mental health of Albertans as part the human health indicators in the Alberta Genuine Progress Indicator accounts. The manuscript identifies a trend of increasing numbers of suicide among men aged 10 to 49, particularly in Calgary. The manuscript also examines the motivations of individuals to contemplate & attempt suicide. The manuscript also includes the estimated health costs related to suicide in Alberta. (AK)
