This article is targeted towards any person doing research on suicide rates in police custody or juvenile detention. This article begins with a definition of what entails a death in custody, & then examines death rates in custody. The article then breaks down the death rates in terms of aboriginal versus non-aboriginal deaths in Australia. The article then proceeds with the demographic characteristics of aboriginality, gender, age, manner of death, offence, & the legal status of those that were in custody. The study concludes with trends from 1980-1993, & gives a brief outline of deaths in custody since the publication of the commission. (5 refs.) (AK)
