This manuscript assesses the literature describing the epidemiology & risk factors for suicidal behaviour among young people. The manuscript includes a review of the evidence for the recognition, management, & prevention of adolescent suicidal behaviour by primary care practitioners. The manuscript also examines New Zealands’ increasing suicidal death rates over the last two decades, especially in males aged 20-24 years. The results of community-based studies suggest that up to 30% of young people will have experienced severe suicidal ideation by 18 years of age. (369 refs.) (AK)
