In a long-term follow-up of borderline patients, developmental problems with mothers were negatively correlated with outcome. Borderlines who suicided, however, had fewer problems with mothers & fewer early separations or losses. In comparison to a group of patients with major depression, borderlines had more problems with mothers & more total separation & loss. (16 refs)
