Binding sites for y-aminobutyric acide, type B, were measured in post-mortem brain samples from a group of suicide victims with clear evidence of depression in the absence of symptoms of other psychiatric or neurological disorders & a group of sex- & age-matched controls. There were no significant differences between depressed suicides & controls in the number or affinity of GAVAB binding sites. A significant negative correlation was found between age & the number of GAVAB binding sites in the temporal cortex. The results indicate that GAVAB binding sites are unaltered in the brains of depressed suicide victims. (31 refs)
