1,466 cases of completed suicide in northern Sweden were analyzed to relate suicide methods with gender, age, place of residence, marital staus, year of suicide, season of suicide, & season of birth. Sex, age, & environment differences were found. Preference for specific means was found to be dependant both on availability & acceptability. No criteria valid generally across the sociodemographic variables justified a grouping of the methods into violent and nonviolent. (44 refs)
