The dynamics & limitations of individual cross sectional, individual longtitudinal, aggregate cross sectional, & aggregate longtitudinal approaches of analysis are illustrated through a review of 134 studies & 795 findings on divorce & suicide. Findings show that while structural cross sectional studies finds support for the divorce-suicide link 80% of the time, longitudinal aggregate research typically fails to do so. It is argued that to date, research & theory are better able to explain the relationship at the individual level than at the aggregate level of analysis. (15 refs)
