A study was undertaken to identify indices of adolescent suicide that might assist practitioners in identifying high risk clients. An Adolescent Stress Inventory was developed after an extensive review of the literature on adolescent suicide. The correlates of suicide were studied and organized into four indices: Problem Events, Problem Behaviors, Intrapersonal Conflict, and Interpersonal Conflict. The inventory was given to all adolescent suicide attempters who were sent to the emergency rooms of two hospitals in Salt Lake County, Utah between August 1984 and February 1985, producing data on 45 adolescent parasuicides.
