Clinical records from all patients suicided during inpatient care or within six months from discharge were retrospectively studied and patients with borderline personality disorder according to DIB were identified. Non-suicidal borderline patients were used as controls. Completed suicides did not seem to be highly over-represented among borderline patients. Male sex, extensive previous hospitalization, previous suicide attempts and a psychological pattern of non-attachment were identified as predictors for completed suicides. Interpersonal conflicts within the treatment unit often preceded the suicides. (15 refs)
