This article discusses an attempt in 1988 to have active euthanasia, as provided by physicians, legalized in California. Reasons why the initiative failed are discussed in some detail including: opposition by the state medical association, too much reliance on public opinion polls which seemed to indicate high levels of support for this measure, & poor organization by the group trying to organize the petitions.
