To identify similarities & differences between AIDS patients & non-AIDS patients, all psychiatric consultations done in 1 year in a large voluntary general hospital were reviewed. The AIDS patients were predominantly heterosexual, Hispanic, & drug using. They were also more likely to have a diagnosis of organic mental disorder. Although they did not show significantly higher rates of psychiatric morbidity (ie. depression, adjustment disorder, substance abuse, suicide) when compared to non-AIDS patients, AIDS seemed to create a much higher demand for psychiatric consultation services.
