Persons living with HIV & AIDS are directly faced with issues of euthanasia & assisted suicide. Considering the challenges which these patients face, it is not surprising that some may want to consider euthanasia or assisted suicide as a way to control some of the circumstances surrounding their death. The incidence of euthanasia or assisted suicide amongst persons with HIV & AIDS is difficult to discern. In The Netherlands, 10-20% of deaths among persons with AIDS involves euthanasia or assisted suicide. In Amsterdam, it’s 26%. In a recent British Columbia study, the rate of AIDS-related assisted deaths in this province was 10-20%. (14 refs)
