In this chapter, suicidal behaviour is conceptualized as a continuum comprising suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, & completed suicide. The demography of adolescent suicidal behaviour in the United States is described, including a discussion of gender & ethnic differences, & methods used for suicide. The origins of adolescent suicidal behaviour are discussed in terms of family instability, escalating distress, dissolving social relationships, & unsuccessful problem-solving efforts. A discussion of assessment & treatment issues concludes the chapter. (72 refs.)
