This article describes the case of a 49-year-old male pharmacist who completed suicide by ingesting barium chloride. The issue of barium toxicity in a variety of iatrogenic and non-iatrogenic situations is discussed together with two other cases of suicidal barium ingestion identified by the authors. The feasibility of early intervention at the scene by an emergency team is also discussed. (19 refs.)
