The introduction of this manual provides background information on suicide including definitions, international & Canadian suicide statistics, facts about suicide, & factors contributing to the high rates of suicide among First Nation populations. The policies & procedures section outlines the steps to be followed in identifying, assessing, & treating suicidal clients or potential clients. The prevention section focuses on strategies that can be adopted by communities to prevent suicide before suicidal thoughts even form in individuals. The intervention section details warning signs, symptoms of depression, the criteria by which suicide risk is defined, & intervention strategies. The postvention section addresses the skills & guidelines needed to effectively support clients, staff, & communities in the event of completed suicide. A comprehensive resource section completes the manual.
