This chapter describes the features of a randomized controlled trial & discusses the problems which might be encountered in using such trials to evaluate the effectiveness of a health promotion intervention. Some alternative types of experimental study design are described. Their strengths & weaknesses in relation to their use in evaluating health promotion intervention are reviewed. (12 refs.)
