In the first 2 years Oregon’s Death With Dignity Act has been operative, 43 people legally obtained & used lethal prescriptions to end their lives. Never-married & divorced persons were 4.2 & 3.2 times, respectively, more likely than married persons to use physician-assisted suicide. The smallness of the sample precludes drawing any firm conclusions; however, in this letter to the editor the authors offer some reasons why they believe never-married & divorced persons are more likely than married persons to take medication to end their lives.
