The purpose of this chapter is to outline the current state of knowledge regarding suicide & attempted suicide, to examine the evaluation of suicidal patients, & to examine the reactions of therapists themselves to their patient’s suicide in the knowledge that this is an experience all therapists may share. Finally, consideration is given to examining institutional responses to suicide to highlight some of the defects & positive aspects of such responses. (35 refs.)
