This article is a response to a study that assessed attitudes toward suicide in the eighteenth century. The author summarizes & criticizes the conclusions of the original article which was based on newspaper accounts of the time. These criticisms question the accuracy & influence of the evidence used in the original study. Moral beliefs that may have influenced readersÕ interpretations of these accounts are also examined. (SC)
