Data on recommended care for young people aged 15-19 years after attempted suicide from 9 European research centres during the period 1989-1992 were analyzed in terms of gender, history of previous suicide attempt, & methods used. Altogether 438 suicide attempts made by 353 males & 1102 suicide attempts made by 941 females were included. Young people with a history of previous suicide attempt & those using violent methods had a significantly higher chance of being recommended to aftercare than first-time attempters or those using self-poisoning. There were no significant gender differences. There were no uniform criteria for recommending aftercare for young suicide attempters in Europe. (35 refs.)
