The association between aggression & CSF 5-HIAA concentrations was studied in a group of 64 patients who had different DSM-III-R axis 1 diagnoses & no past suicidal behaviour. Aggressive (n=35) & nonaggressive (n=29) groups were defined. The aggressive group had significantly lower CSF 5-HIAA concentrations than the nonaggressive group. It is concluded there is an association between aggressive behaviour & serotonergic dysfunction independent of suicidal behaviour in patients with axis 1 disorders who exhibit relatively milder forms of aggressive behaviour.
