A cohort of all Danish men born between 1949 & 1964 who were diagnosed with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus before age 20 (n=1682) was studied. Follow-up from diagnosis to death or January 1991 was based on record linkage & information from death certificates. There were 168 deaths recorded during follow-up, 15 of which were excluded from the study. Of the remaining 153, 12 were officially classified as suicides. All deaths officially classified as unknown cause or accidental were reviewed. 6 of these deaths could be ruled as possible or probable suicides. Young men with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus may have a higher risk of suicide than expected. (17 refs.)
