This study assessed the validity of a computerized assessment of depression & suicidal ideation in a sample of 98 psychiatric patients. Questions were formulated to ask about the presence (last 7 days) & intensity of symptoms. The mean scores for the total depression scale, the core depression scale, & suicidal ideation were somewhat higher for females than males & higher for inpatients than outpatients. None of the differences reached statistical significance. It is concluded the computerized assessment yielded results comparable with those from routine clinical assessment. (7 refs.)
