This study assessed the relationship between being bullied or being a bully at school, depression, & severe suicidal ideation. A school based survey was conducted in secondary schools in two regions of Finland. There was an increased prevalence of depression & severe suicidal ideation among both those being bullied & those who were bullies. When symptoms of depression were controlled for, suicidal ideation occurred most often among adolescents who were bullies. The need for psychiatric intervention should be considered for both the victims of bullying & the bullies. (23 refs.)
