There were 1063 acute burn patients admitted to the Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong between March 1993 & February 1999. 11 patients were burned due to a suicide attempt (7 males, 4 females). The median age was 38 years. Four patients died from their injuries. Compared to the general burn population, the suicide group had a larger extent of burns, higher incidence of inhalation injury, required more operative treatment, & longer hospital stays with a higher mortality rate.
