This article reviews the literature & research on the prediction & prevention of suicidal & violent/homicidal impulses of psychiatric clients. The preponderance of studies suggest the prediction of suicide or violence may not be possible given current knowledge. Clinicians need to perform thorough assessments & make logical clinical decisions that are in line with perceived risks. Treatment effects can be maximized by following specific intervention guidelines. (37 refs.)
