Lester (1994) found marriage & divorce rates were not significantly associated with the time-series suicide rate in Singapore. For the present analysis, suicide rates by ethnic group were obtained for Singapore for 1955-1984 & the time-series regressions were carried out using Doan (1990) to correct for the serial autocorrelation in the data sets with Cochrane-Orcutt technique. From 1955-1984, the Chinese suicide rate increased, the Indian & Malaysian suicide rates did not change, while the suicide rate of “others” decreased. (2 refs.)
