This chapter discusses the use of psychometric scales in suicide risk assessment. It is suggested scales used in the daily clinical setting should be simple & brief with 10 or less items. A number of scales are briefly discussed under the following categories: psychiatric domains of suicidal behaviour; classification of suicide attempters; suicidal thoughts & impulses; & quality of life, depressed mood, hopelessness, & distress. The clinical use of psychometric scales is briefly reviewed. (21 refs.)
