This presentation discussed suicide in the countries of the Indian subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, & Maldives). Generally, suicidal behaviour is not well studied. Data collection poses formidable challenges with underreporting, misdiagnosis, stigma, & legal issues being important factors. The most important aspect of prevention is to recognize suicide as a social problem. Increasing rates of suicide highlight the need for more & better information on suicidal behaviour & an urgent need for preventive action.
