The primary goal of this study was to examine which aspects of family functioning affect adolescent suicidal ideation. The study sample comprised 89 consecutive outpatient admissions between the ages of 12 and 18. Findings indicated the significant impact of family dysfunction on adolescent suicidality in the areas of problem-solving, communication, emotional responsiveness, & parental affection. The usefulness of the Suicide Ideation Questionnaire (SIQ) as a measure of suicidal ideation was ascertained. (11 refs.)
