People suffering from advanced cancer may question the point of carrying on. It is essential that nurses are sensitive to patients’ suicidal feelings at such times, & that a multidisciplinary assessment is made of the patient’s key concerns. By bringing such problems into the open, these concerns may begin to be addressed. This article reviews suicide risk factors & discusses a plan for managing suicidal patients. Cognitive therapy is also briefly discussed. (13 refs.)
