This article aims to clarify the meaning & scope of formative & process evaluation, & to identify examples of their application to health promotion & disease prevention programs. Process & formative evaluation are examined in turn. Definitions of each approach provided in the literature are examined. Based on the definitions & examples, a summary of the key features of each approach is provided. There is discussion of the relationship between formative & process evaluation in terms of the primary purpose of each approach, the use made of evaluation findings, & the role of the evaluator.
