This paper examines available data on youth suicide, including longitudinal data for Australia & selected international comparisons. A number of suggested causes & predisposing factors, most importantly depression, leading up to a high risk of youth suicide are outlined. Other risk factors are identified & include: family conflict, perfectionism, families with psychiatric problems, negative aspects of youth culture, youth unemployment, & rapid cultural & social change. A number of national & community-based initiatives are proposed & best practice examples, highlighting school-based programs, for community-based prevention are presented.
