Psychopathology and Substance Abuse (IN: Substance Abuse and Psychiatric Illness, edited by E Gottheil et al)

This chapter presents 3 studies that investigate possible relationships between substance abuse & psychopathology. Results indicate that there is a relationship between type of drug abused & diagnosis of particular psychiatric disorder. Psychological symptoms, such as suicidal thoughts, may be related to type of drug abused. The final study utilized a longitudinal design to study psychopathology in drug abusers, indicating consistent patterns of change dependant upon type of drug. (40 refs) (SC)
