This article describes the New York City Department of Corrections jails system & reviews the characteristics of the inmate population, in particular their mental health problems. The system, programs, & policies that have been established to serve & manage mentally ill inmates are then discussed. In particular, a unique suicide prevention initiative, the “Inmate Observation Aide Program”, is highlighted. The article concludes with some ideas for enhancing mental health care in jails.
