This article discusses suicide as a major social & public health problem in Australia. Suicide trends, associated social factors, neurobiological correlations of suicidal behaviour, methods of suicide, & the relationship of mental illness & suicide are reviwed. The prevention of suicide is discussed in terms of specific psychotherapies & psychotropic medications. The article concludes with a description of Australia’s national goals & targets for the reduction of suicide. (32 refs.)
