In the 1980s, the United States Postal Service & the United States Customs Service initiated programs to catch & prosecute those who purchased child pornography through the mail. Of the first 162 men arrested, four committed suicide. A recent Police Royal Commission in Australia into police corruption resulted in a spate of suicides among those publicly named in connection with the commission or after they had interviewed by the commission. It is recommended that future investigations of this nature should include mental health professionals to interview & counsel those who are investigated or charged. Those identified as being at high risk of suicide should be provided with appropriate care. (2 refs.)
