Abstract
Suicide – a Traveller’s Tale. A Study of the Adoption of the Word ‘Suicide’ Into the Main Romance Languages
Shepherd D M~~Barraclough D M
The word ‘suicide’ suggests a Latin origin but this is misleading. As the authors stated in an earlier paper, the real origin of the word was an English coinage in the seventeenth century. This paper traces the history of the inclusion of analogue forms of ‘suicide’ into French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, & Romanian. (58 refs.)
