Critics have generally agreed that Shakespeare’s version of Cleopatra’s death is very close to that in Plutarch. Much attention has been given to identifying other classical & Renaissance sources which may have influenced Shakespeare. In this essay, Higgins proposes Shakespeare’s source is a mediaeval saint’s life, the Middle English life of Saint Christina. (29 notes)
